IOSH vs OTHM Level 6: which safety course is right for you?
Two names come up again and again when people plan a career in health and safety: IOSH Managing Safely and the OTHM Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety. Both are internationally recognised, and Cosmic Safety teaches both. They are very different qualifications, though, and picking the wrong one can cost you time and money. This guide explains the difference in plain words.
The short answer
- Choose IOSH Managing Safely if you are a manager, supervisor or team leader who needs a quick, respected safety certificate. It takes just 4 days.
- Choose OTHM Level 6 if you want to work as a safety professional and grow into senior HSE roles such as HSE manager. It is a one-year diploma.

What you learn on IOSH Managing Safely
IOSH Managing Safely teaches managers how to assess and control risks, investigate incidents, measure safety performance and understand their legal responsibilities. It is practical and short, which is why companies often send whole teams of supervisors. Cosmic Safety is an IOSH Approved Training Provider (4140) and runs both version 5.0 and version 6.0.
What you learn on OTHM Level 6
The OTHM Level 6 Diploma goes much deeper: health and safety management systems, risk management, safety culture, health and wellbeing, legislation and how to lead safety in an organisation. Because it is assessed by projects rather than one exam, you build real evidence of your skills while you study.
Can I do both?
Yes, and many people do. A common path is to complete IOSH Managing Safely first for a quick international certificate, gain some site experience, then move on to OTHM Level 6 when you are ready for a career-defining qualification.
Which one helps more with jobs?
For supervisor and management jobs outside the safety department, IOSH Managing Safely is often enough. For safety officer, HSE engineer and HSE manager positions, employers look for higher qualifications, and a Level 6 diploma puts you in a much stronger position. Cosmic Safety also offers job assistance for qualified students.
